Challenges like these are where the Smartroof team excels. When national housebuilder Taylor Wimpey began developing Plumb Park in Exmouth, Devon, the plans included a striking centrepiece – a terrace of 18 townhouses arranged in a distinctive curve overlooking the hilltop park.

Each of the 2½-storey homes features Smartroof’s panelised Room-in-Roof system, precisely engineered to suit the bespoke curved roof design.

The Smartroof team had two main challenges to overcome; making straight timber appear as if it was bending around the curved structure and a curved design for the gable roofs, which had a triangular apex projection on the front elevation.

Both of these would have presented significant technical difficulties for the onsite joinery contractors, but thanks to the Smartroof offsite manufacturing facility, the design and technical team could achieve the architect’s design with millimetre precision.

The curved roof structure on the crescent homes at Plumb Park was always going to be a challenge but the team at Smartroof surpassed our expectations.  As we have seen in our other developments, the end result was impressive with the room in roof system delivering on all fronts. It enabled us to reduce our build costs and health and safety risks onsite whilst at the same time improve the thermal efficiency and build quality of these homes.
