Marking Women in Construction Week and National Careers Week at Keystone Group

This year, Women in Construction Week and National Careers Week take place at the same time – a perfect opportunity for us at the Keystone Group to celebrate both the role of women in our industry and the importance of supporting future talent.

To mark the occasion, we spoke with our Head of Early Careers, Roseanna Daly, about the opportunities available to young people – particularly young women – considering a future in construction.

Creating Pathways into Construction

At Keystone Group, we are proud to offer a range of opportunities for students interested in building a career in the construction sector.

Roseanna explains:

“We are proud to offer a range of work experience, industrial placements and apprenticeship opportunities to students interested in a role in the construction sector. These programmes provide invaluable real-world experience and help young people build the skills and confidence they need to thrive.”

These early career pathways allow individuals to gain practical, hands-on experience outside the classroom — developing technical knowledge, workplace skills and professional confidence that support long-term career progression.

Building Confidence Through Experience

Placements and apprenticeships play a vital role in helping young women build confidence in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry.

“The skills and knowledge young people gain during placements, work experience or apprenticeships are invaluable,” Roseanna says. “It’s hugely important that young people develop real-life skills outside of the classroom that will help them as they move through their career journey, and we are proud to offer enriching experiences through our programmes.”

By providing structured support and mentorship we help young people realise their potential and see a clear pathway for growth within the industry.

The Power of Visibility and Representation

Representation matters. Seeing women succeed in technical, site-based and leadership roles can be transformational for young women exploring their career options.

Roseanna continues, “At Keystone Group, we’re fortunate to have a number of females in senior leadership roles, as well as many women in technical, design, IT and operations roles,” Roseanna explains. “These role models help to inspire others to join the industry.”

By showcasing diverse career journeys, we aim to demonstrate that construction offers opportunity for everyone.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Engagement with schools and outreach initiatives play a key role in encouraging more young women to consider construction careers.

We are proud to partner with organisations such as WomensTec, which works with young girls and women to explore roles they may not previously have considered.

In addition, our team includes approximately 20 STEM ambassadors who work with schools, colleges and universities to promote careers in STEM-related fields, helping to break down misconceptions and widen access to opportunity.

Advice for Young Women Considering Construction

When asked what advice she would give to a young girl who has never considered construction before, Roseanna’s message is simple:

“Never say never! Be open to trying opportunities in the construction sector. Avail of work experience opportunities to get an idea of what a role in construction might be like and whether it would be something you are interested in.”
