Apprentice Builder: Lintels Back to Basics

Windows and doors are essential components of any construction project but they also represent vulnerable points in the building’s external envelope.  Creating an opening in the outer skin of a building requires careful engineering to ensure structural and thermal stability is maintained, which is where lintels come into play. Here, Nick Lander, Sales and Marketing Director at Keystone Group, takes a closer look at the use of lintels in construction.A lintel is essentially a structural support that spans an opening in a wall.  The use of lintels in architecture dates back many centuries – from the highly decorative masonry creations used in ancient Greece, to the timber lintels seen in Tudor times.

Innovations in Roof Windows

The benefits of natural light are well documented so it’s little surprise that many clients are seeking unusual and creative ways of incorporating daylight into their projects.  Roof windows are an effective means of illuminating awkward or restricted spaces, as well as being an attractive design feature in their own right – so it’s important for roofing contractors to stay on top of the latest trends.

Sophisticated Daylight Control from Keylite

Further extending its innovative range of roof windows and accessories, Keylite Roof Windows, part of the Keystone Group, has launched an integral blind option – where the blind is permanently sealed within the double glazing unit, resulting in a totally dust free environment. This delivers a number of advantages that make it ideal for commercial, public sector and residential settings.  Requiring no cleaning it is perfect for sterile environments such as hospitals or doctor’s surgeries, while the protection afforded by the glass results in a much longer lifespan, meaning it can be installed in busy environments such as schools or offices without fear of damage.  For domestic installations, it offers a non-allergenic, maintenance free solution, making it an extremely popular choice.
